Our Upstate Fall Weekend: A Story of Connection, Color & Community

Oh, what fun My Two Homes had during our upstate fall weekend. The leaves were painted in the most breathtaking shades of red and gold, the air was crisp and fresh, and the weather felt like absolute perfection. Eight kids and five moms — just the right amount of beautiful, joyful chaos — packed up for a weekend that would end up meaning even more than we imagined.

My Two Homes was created as a support group for families and children navigating divorce and separation. It began with one simple goal: to make sure our kids didn’t feel alone while adjusting to life between two homes. Divorce can bring so many emotions — confusion, sadness, change, growth — and children often carry those feelings quietly. We wanted them to have a space where they felt understood without having to explain themselves. What we found along the way was something even greater than “not alone.” We found community.

Our weekend was filled with the kind of simple joys that turn into lifelong memories. We went pumpkin picking, took long nature walks surrounded by trees glowing in red and yellow. The kids ran, laughed, and bounded through the weekend with a lightness that felt freeing. There’s something incredibly powerful about watching children who share similar life experiences simply get to be kids together.

We even ventured out to a quaint, family-friendly restaurant — all 13 of us. If you’ve ever taken a group of kids that size anywhere, you know it’s an adventure in itself. But sitting around that table, hearing the laughter bounce back and forth, it didn’t feel chaotic. It felt like family. There were moments throughout the weekend where you could pause, look around, and truly feel the connection that has grown between all of us.

Last year, we asked the kids what they wanted more of from My Two Homes moving forward. Their answer was unanimous: more trips. They didn’t ask for bigger events or anything extravagant. They simply wanted more time together. These trips give them something that can’t be measured — shared understanding, easy friendships, and the comfort of knowing someone else truly gets it.

What started as a way to support our children through family change has grown into something so much deeper. We’ve built friendships that will never be forgotten. We’ve created a circle of support that shows up when it’s needed most. We’ve shared laughter that feels healing. Somewhere along the way, we found our groove.

These weekends are beyond special — for the kids and for us moms. Every time we return home, our heartstrings feel so full of love and gratitude for one another. It’s a reminder that even when families change shape, something beautiful can grow in its place.

At My Two Homes, we are committed to supporting families navigating divorce not just through conversation, but through connection and shared experience. And this fall weekend was proof that we are building something truly meaningful — together.
