7 Tips for Talking to Your Kids About Divorce

Having a conversation about divorce with your children can feel overwhelming. These seven simple tips that can help you approach it with care, clarity and confidence.

1. Prepare Yourself First

Take time to process your own emotions. Children sense stress, so being calm and grounded will help them feel safe.

2. Present a Unified Message (if possible)

Whenever you can, talk to your kids together. A consistent story helps them feel secure and reduces confusion.

3. Reassure Them

Make it clear: This is not your fault. Both Mom and Dad love you very much. Kids need to hear this more than once.

4. Answer Honestly — Keep It Age-Appropriate

Share the truth without blaming or oversharing adult details. Focus on what changes affect them directly.

5. Don’t Blame the Other Parent

Avoid negative comments. Criticizing the other parent makes children feel caught in the middle and unsure if it’s safe to share their feelings openly.

6. Keep the Door Open

Let your kids know they can always come back with questions or feelings. Remind them this is an ongoing conversation, not just one talk.

7. Respect Their Readiness

If your child says “I don’t want to talk right now” or walks away, don’t force it. Gently say, “That’s okay, we can talk later or tomorrow. We love you.” This shows respect for their timing and reassures them of your unconditional love.
